Corridor Art Programme Official Opening 2011 at Limerick Enterprise Development Park

The Mayor Cllr Maria Byrne officially opened the Corridor Art Programme at Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership in Roxboro Road Limerick. Where there were once blank walls today a landmark city building can boast 20 original large scale works of art, the largest being 16ft long by 12ft high.

Addressing the large gathering including the young participants their parents and the sponsors of he programme The Mayor thanked the young people from the locality for their dedication to the programme over the last 3 years and especially Angela Connolly co-ordinator of the Corridor Art Programme.

The Mayor said there was great credit due to the young people for their commitment to the work in the corridor, and that they had transformed the space into something very colourful and a joy to look at.

The 20 larger than life murals of horses will be on permanent view for years to come and will be a constant example of young peoples interest in creating a better environment for the community they live in.

Each work carries colourful references to interests such as tattoos, substance abuse, social exclusion and the most recent addition to the corridor a mural on animal welfare. This mural was painted by a group of first year students from Roxboro School Completion Programme, Young Women’s Group.

Liam McElligott CEO of LEDP who donated the corridor space also thanked the young people for transforming the corridor into a place of artistic merit and said that people passing through the corridor either visiting or from the local area or from abroad could not fail but be impressed with the wonderful art work in the corridor.

What was once a dreary long corridor was now a place of great interest with everyone having a favourite mural to look forward to seeing on there journey through the “mile long corridor.”

As well as members of the Corridor Art collaborating on themes and the division of work to create each mural, the crew learn to research an idea, the process of different methods of application – transfers, acetate, projection on to wall, composition, balance, painting and drawing techniques.

Angela Connolly Co-Ordinator of the programme thanked the LEDP for donating the space and also the Limerick Regeneration Agency for their help and assistance together with Southill Outreach , Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School , Roxboro School Completion Programme and The Southside Garda Diversion Group for their help in providing the “ Crew “ who participated in the work in the corridor

The programme encourages people of all ages to get involved but particularly young people from the ages of 10 to 18 years.

In June 2009 the Ombudsman Emily Logan presented Corridor Art with an award for its effort in connecting communities. As a direct result of this award 20 young people were invited to travel to Dublin to meet the ombudsman and were one of a group of four who participated in giving their views to the Council of Europe on building a child friendly justice system and on Building a Europe for and with children

The Crew and their parents along with local business people, volunteers of the programme, youth workers and sponsors of the Corridor Art Programme enjoyed a most exciting social evening after the formal opening with everyone enjoying pancakes and chocolate spread.
